The governing body approved a resolution (AR-69-23) last month “authorizing municipal support and preference” for Plantabis Dispensary, LLC to receive a Class 5 Cannabis Retail License from the state’s Cannabis Regulatory Commission (CRC) to operate in the city.

Plantabis Dispensary, which filed its LLC paperwork in February 2022, plans to operate at 2077 Route 1, located in a preferred zone where such uses are permitted under the city’s ordinance. Under current regulations, retail cannabis operations are permitted within four zones in Rahway: I-L, Light Industrial Zone, I-H, Heavy Industrial Zone, B-2 Regional Business Zone, and B-3 Highway Business Zone, which includes the planned Plantabis location.

Plantabis has presented the city with “sufficient evidence that if it is granted a retail license, it will have control of a lawful site within the city’s approved zone,” according to the resolution.

As part of Plantabis Dispensary’s application to the CRC, a proof of local support must be included. In addition to a resolution of support, the city is authorized to express preference to the CRC.

It’s not the first time that the governing body has provided support for a cannabis operator. In December 2021, City Council approved a similar resolution in support of two entities to operate in Rahway: Saucey Farms at 293 St. Georges Ave., the site of the former Galaxy Diner, and Aeterna, LLC, at 211 E. Inman Ave. The difference in those two cases is that they were not potential retail dispensaries but manufacturing and cultivation.

City Council has established regulations within Rahway where cannabis operations can set up, including retail operations, and recently tabled amendments that are expected to be revisited. the governing body passed legislation allowing retail operations.
