The Savoy: “Not dead”

The developers of The Savoy are still in search of financing, but the project is “not dead,” according to City Administrator and Redevelopment Director Peter Pelissier. Briefing commissioners during last week’s Redevelopment Agency meeting, Pelissier said Hillside-based Dornoch/Maplewood Homes is still waiting to get a financial commitment.

The 36-unit project proposed at 1562 Main St. hasn’t seen any activity since last summer.

Not dead yet. Sort of reminds me of the Will Ferrell character from the 1997 movie, Austin Powers: “No, not dead. Burned. Badly.”

  1. I wouldn't believe anything that Dornock tells you. Just go ask Nick at the Greek American Deli. They've been stepped on by both the city & Dornoch.

  2. Arch, what does your comment mean about Nick and the Greek American Deli? I’ve been wondering about that place, since I live right across the street and since I moved in, it’s obviously not been opened a single day.

  3. Dornoch was the developer working with the city (when the economy was still positive)in buying up certain properties downtown. Most of the empty buildings on Cherry Street are theirs. The city with their redevelopment agency deemed certain properties 'the next to go' either by knocking them down or just renovating them. Most buildings were leveled. As you can see by all the empty lots next to the Deli. Nick & Tina were forced to close-up their deli by a certain date because they were told that they had to vacate the property & sell it to Dornoch. They were one of the fighters who didn't want to give in. They held off till the last possible moment. They also sold off all their equipment. Then the bottom fell out of the economy, Dornoch disappears, & the deli gets no money. Maybe the city could do the right thing & help them out

  4. As McCoy would say, “It’s dead, Jim”.”Or perhaps it’s just mostly dead. There’s a big difference between mostly dead and all dead. Mostly dead is still alive…”I don’t think Miracle Max can help this time. If we’re in the beginning of the end of the financial crisis, it’s 5 years before anything happens. If we’re in the end of the beginning, it’s time to start looking at 2020.

  5. Just another LIE by the greedy people taking deposits. Has Dornoch refunded the 12 people whom have contracts at the Savoy. They ought to spend less money on their worthless marketing team and more money on paying people back their deposits. Oh they have another “GRAND OPENING” in Paterson, I wonder how many deposits they took there. Rahway stop being intimidated and call a spade a spade, take the property and sell it to some one who has some money.
