Maybe it’s because a sandwich is so utilitarian. You can sit down and enjoy it or eat it on the run. It can be as simple as it is complex. With that pithy ode to the venerable sandwich, here’s this month’s reader poll for April, sponsored by the Rahway Special Improvement (SID):

This poll is a bit different than others, like Favorite Pizza or Favorite Restaurant. A lot of things might go into what makes your Favorite Restaurant. Obviously, the food is key but maybe it could also be the atmosphere and ambiance. Plus, maybe the restaurant doesn’t serve sandwiches and this is straight up about the sandwich.

That’s why there are so many options in this poll. It could be a burger – always popular at restaurants – but maybe it’s a wrap, a panini, gyro, or a big fat hero. Maybe it’s a handheld at your favorite takeout place, an egg sandwich at your breakfast joint, or a grilled cheese that accompanies tomato soup at lunch.

Last year’s Favorite Sandwich poll saw Flynn’s Pub House win with almost a quarter of the vote, edging out The Irving Social and Bianca’s Deli. As many as 16 other establishments received at least one vote, ranging from sandwich shops, delis, bagel shops, pizza joints and cafes.

The poll will be open to cast your ballots for several weeks before results are posted by the end of this month. As always, please let me know if I’ve missed anyone in the options and I’ll add them. And if you vote Other, explain in the comments below. Or, feel free to ruminate about the specific sandwich you’ve voted and why.
