Poll results: Favorite Latin restaurant

The monthly reader poll for May could not have ended up being any closer unless the results were a tie.

And there were plenty of ties but not at the top of the poll. Sponsored by the Rahway Special Improvement District, the poll garnered 41 votes among readers this month.

What’s your favorite Latin restaurant in Rahway?

  1. Hugo’s — 22% (9/41 votes)
  2. Sabor Peruano — 20% (8/41)
  3. CubaNu — 12% (5/41)
  4. Portuguese Cuisine & Wine Bar — 10% (4/41)
  5. Gigi’s Latin Bistro — 7% (3/41)
  6. [TIE] Las Piñatas — 5% (2/41)
  7. Ortega’s BBQ Churrasqueira — 5% (2/41)
  8. La Malinche — 5% (2/41)
  9. Monchy’s — 5% (2/41)
  10. [TIE] JJ Latin American Grill — 2% (1/41)
  11. Caído del Cielo — 2% (1/41)
  12. El Patron Lounge – 2% (1/41)
  13. Other — 2% (1/41)

Peruvian cuisine in particular, had a very strong showing among the group overall. Hugo’s on Main Street, which bills itself as Latin Peruvian, edged out Sabor Peruano on Irving Street, which also services up Peruvian cuisine.

CubaNu at the corner of Main and Lewis streets for more than a decade, finished third in voting, just ahead of a relative newcomer, Portuguese Cuisine & Wine Bar, which opened a couple of years ago along Main Street near East Cherry street. Another recent new addition, Gigi’s Latin Bistro, which took over the former Mr. Apple Pie space on Irving Street and serves Puerto Rican cuisine, finished fifth in voting.

After that, it was a big pile up… with a four-way tie for sixth among the options: Las Piñatas on Whittier Street, Ortega’s BBQ Churrasqueira on Madison Hill Road, La Malinche on Irving Street, and Monchy’s Colombian Grill on Main Street, each finished with 5% of the vote.

There were three other options that nabbed at least one vote, to finish in a tie for 10th place, along with one vote for Other. Maybe I missed a place when I listed the poll, so please feel free to let me know in the comments who that might be. Along with that vote for Other, the three joints that also received one vote were: JJ Latin American Grill in Lincoln Plaza on Route 27, Caído del Cielo at Irving and West Main streets, and El Patron Lounge on New Brunswick Avenue and East Stearns Street.

I’m always open to suggestions on what kinds of polls you’d like to see. If you have any ideas, just give a shout, in the comments below or by email.
