Downtown pharmacy moves to St. Georges

Skaff’s CorSkaffs Pharmacy.old location from Cherryner Pharmacy is no longer on the corner of East Cherry and Main streets in downtown Rahway.

The local pharmacy moved out of its 90 E. Cherry St. location, planning to open today in a new space at St. George Shopping Center on St. Georges Avenue.

Gelber Associates last year built an approximately 2,800-square-foot Skaffs Pharmacy.new locationbuilding with two commercial spaces adjacent to its existing storefronts at the shopping center. A Subway franchise relocated from the corner of St. Georges and West Milton avenues into about 1,000 square feet on the west side of the new building and Skaff’s will occupy the remaining space.

Substation eyed for potential redevelopment

A substation on Monroe Street and Clarkson Place, just across the river from downtown, has the interest of a potential developer.

Substation at Monroe and ClarksonIn his report to the Redevelopment Agency at its March 5 meeting, Redevelopment Director Peter Pelissier said he and Interim Mayor Samson Steinman met with Mark Fauci of Iselin-based American Properties about potential redevelopment sites in the city and one area that piqued interest was substation on Monroe Street and Clarkson Place. Years ago, the substation had been discussed in passing as another area for potential redevelopment, with the idea of entertaining Requests For Proposals (RFPs) for the area.

Main Street project would get 30-year PILOT

The City Council next month will consider the fourth Payment In Lieu Of Taxes (PILOT) in the last two years, this time for the largest project and the longest program yet.

Project likely won’t require 18-foot levee

The 248-unit project proposed on the site of The Center Circle sports complex likely will not require the Rahway River levee to be 18 feet. Rahway Main Street is expected to have a first floor elevation of 14 feet.

50ff2-centercirclerendering1In his report to Redevelopment Agency commissioners at the March 5 meeting, Redevelopment Director Peter Pelissier said at the time that there may be some difficulty based on what the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) sets as a levee. Preliminary conversations between the developer, Lavallette-based AST Development Corporation, and the DEP confirmed that the “flood plain does not appear to extend into the development site.”

Dornoch property wins tax appeal for 2012

A Main Street property that was among more than a half-dozen properties acquired years ago by developer Dornoch Holdings won a tax appeal, knocking about 17 percent off the tax bill for 2012 and a 6-percent reduction in the assessment.

The property at 1501 Main St. (Block 320, Lot 12) had an overall property tax bill of almost $14,700 last year. The assessment for 2013 was $229,700 and reduced by about 6.3 percent to $215,100, according to property records.

Metro Rahway project moving along

West Cherry and Campbell

With a completion timeline of later this summer, Metro Rahway continues to rise along Campbell Street with the work on the West Cherry Street side reaching the third story.

The 116-unit apartment complex being built at the former A&M Supply site will include 62 two-bedroom units and 52 one-bedroom units in four floors of living space above one level of parking, with 120 spaces and another 18 on-street spaces.

The A&M Supply building was demolished in June and Metro Rahway got under way later in the year. The project received a 15-year Payment In Lieu Of Taxes (PILOT), approved by the City Council last year, details of which can be found here.

Village Bistro to open on East Cherry Street

The Village Bistro, a halal and kosher style eatery, plans a grand opening on Friday, taking East Cherry Street space formerly occupied by D&R’s Deli and for many years by Big Belly Deli.

Big Belly Deli had occupied the space from about early 2005 until March 2011.  D&R replaced it later in 2011, until it closed up shop last year.

For the uninitiated, here’s the answer to your question, “What’s halal meat?”

The building at 78 E. Cherry St., built in 1900, is on the market for $265,000 and includes apartments on the upper floors, but the retail tenant has a lease that would have to be honored by a new owner, according to Bob Markey of Striker Realty . Property taxes run about $10,400 annually, according to property records.

Agency to get additional $100k in fees for project

The Redevelopment Agency will receive another $100,000 in redevelopment fees from Metro Rahway, currently under construction on Campbell Street.
