Senior housing facility to open this summer

Fifteen months after breaking ground and five and half years after it was first presented, a senior housing facility will welcome residents later this summer on the site of the former St. Mary’s Church convent.

A lottery will be held tomorrow for tenants to get into the 51-unit Jack and Margaret Myers Senior Residence, according to John Westervelt, chief financial officer and vice president of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Newark. The four-story building will be up and running by July with people moving in when their applications are approved, he said.

The convent building was demolished in April 2010 and the Zoning Board of Adjustment approved the application about a year later. It first was proposed to the City Council in late 2007 and the governing body later approved 40-year Payment In Lieu Of Taxes for the project.

  1. Overall it looks like a very good-looking building from the photograph . . . except for those god-awful wall-unit air conditioners poking out all over the place. I had no idea people were still building new construction with those things. One would think by 2013 we'd have a more attractive way to provide cooling in a smart, efficient way without sticking ugly metal boxes (soon to be even uglier as they weather) out of dozens of holes in what otherwise would be a nice building facade.

  2. No taxes for 40 years ? I would be thrilled if i could get one year for free ! One could actually pay an entire seperate mortgage with the savings. At least we have great schools, wait, scratch that. Fireworks ? Nope. Bloated salaries ? Yup. Good job there Samson. Keep up the good work !

  3. Where did get the idea that there are no taxes for 40 years? PILOT *does not* simply mean it doesn't pay taxes.PILOT = Payment In Lieu Of Taxes but that doesn't mean it pays zero taxes. Even in other PILOTs in Rahway, the developer is paying *some* taxes. In this particular case, the property actually pays taxes instead of not, since it's owned by a nonprofit, Archdiocese of Newark. The PILOT is a percentage of gross revenue from the rents.

  4. Silent Bob I'm starting to love you. ROTTEN. YOU ARE A LATE BLOOMER. THE DOWNTOWN LOOKS GREAT. AND THE ARTS. YES NO FIRWORKS FOR THE PAST 7YEARS.
