Permit parking changes along Campbell Street

City Council approved changes to permit parking regulations along the north end of Campbell Street, ahead of the completion of a 116-unit rental complex in response to residents’ concerns when shows are held at the nearby Union County Performing Arts Center (UCPAC).

Campbell StCity Council earlier this month approved O-34-14, which continues permit parking on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. along both sides of Campbell Street from West Cherry Street to Central Avenue but permit parking will be extended to 24 hours on the west side of the street, from the southwest corner of Central Avenue extending 379 feet — only about halfway down the block toward Elm Avenue but not as far as the new Metro Rahway project (see map above).

City Administrator Cherron Rountree said the governing body changed the parking regulations after some concerns raised by residents around West Cherry Street during the planning process of Metro Rahway.

T84b06-ucacfronthe five-story Metro Rahway project on Campbell Street aims to open this fall but Police Chief John Rodger said the permit parking changes are unrelated. Residents of the north end of Campbell were complaining that they could not park in front of their homes when shows took place at the UCPAC on Irving Street.

A survey of Campbell Street residents showed that only the residents of the north end wanted the extension of permit parking, Rodger said. Residential permit parking that existed before still exists, he added.

City Council also approved O-32-14 at the August meeting, creating permit parking weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., on both sides of Maple Avenue from Pierpont Street to St. Georges Avenue.
