Our coffee cup runneth over

So the “Coming Soon” sign at Mr. G’s a couple months ago wasn’t an exaggeration. It’s been open for more than a week, with an “official” grand opening planned on Monday. Last year we could barely find a cafe or coffee shop and now we can expect three by summer’s end (Kataluma Chai and Inthemix).

I stopped in before a City Council meeting last week after noticing some activity, an open door and balloons. Owner George Simpson — the G in Mr. G’s Cafe — was the original franchisee of Cuppy’s Coffee, which had signed a lease last summer, but that deal fell through to say the least.

Another note on local retail/commercial: It looks like a new Rahway Barber Shop will replace the former Rahway Florist on West Grand Avenue. The two-story property at 739 W. Grand Ave. got a facelift over the last few months, including a new awning and new windows on the second-floor apartments.

The 3,000-square-foot building sits across from Rocky’s Bar and Grill and C-Town and changed hands about a year ago for $330,000. Assessed at $250,600, the 0.1952-acre site paid about $12,000 in property taxes last year, according to state property records.

  1. The coffee place seems nice hopefully they will be open early enough for morning commuters. To get a bite before there train comes

  2. Stopped by on my way to the train the other morning and the coffee was pretty goood at a regular price. It nice to help out a "local" place. They also speak english so I dont have to repeat 3 times milk and two sugars!!!

  3. The coffee place is OK. Not really set up for more than one person at a time to get their coffee during the morning rush. There is just one guy (the owner?) working behind the counter, filling cups out of those Thermos Pump Pots, adding in the sugar and milk himself and running the register. Took me 5 minutes to get a cup of coffee. No problem on a leisurely Sunday but during rush hour, people are going to have to walk out while waiting so they don't miss their train.I wonder why the owner wouldn't want to set up a pump your own type situation for faster throughput? There are not enough customers right now to warrant it perhaps, but each time someone is in there with even one other person in line, they are likely going to leave if there is a chance they will miss their train.I would go back again to try one of the interesting sandwiches on the menu but that can't be my regular coffee stop unless they pick up the pace. Also, the pastries and bagels don't look to be home made and if they are delivered, they are on par with 'coffee cart' quality. Aren't coffee sales the bread and butter of any coffee establishment?

  4. Had a nice tuna melt sandwich on Saturday they need a little conter help so that the cook isn't also the cashier to gat people out faster, but all in all the tuna wrap filled me up and i didn't miss my train.
