KC Jazz construction: 6 to 9 months

Construction at KC Jazz restaurant could take anywhere from six to nine months and should start soon, according to developer Casey Granieri, who’s waiting for construction bids.

The former Kelly’s Pub building at Seminary Avenue and Irving Street received Planning Board approval (.pdf) last July. The renovated structure will have a capacity of about 100 people and feature a 1,400-square-foot patio and distinctive 37-foot tower. The second floor will include two two-bedroom apartments.

To celebrate the city’s 150th anniversary, the Rahway Center Partnership will sponsor a block party on East Cherry Street Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

  1. I’m anxious to see what type of crowd this brings. According to their website, Trompet player Warren Vache is supposed to book all talent. He currently has a Thursday night gig at Lana’s in Clark. Has anyone seen him play?

  2. So if I’m looking at the two buildings in the photo … KC Jazz is going to set up shop in one of those existing buildings (if so, which one – the one on the right, I assume?). Or are they going to build new construction?Anyone know? The buildings in the photo look sort of dumpy and don’t appear to have any aesthetic or historic value; I’d prefer to see them knocked down and something new built there. Maybe I’m missing something …

  3. I just checked out the link to the kcjazzrestaurant.com website and from drawing on their website it looks like both of the buildings in the photo will be torn down and new construction will go up in their place. But it’s difficult to tell for sure. Also, from the meeting minutes document linked to in the blog posting, the project is described as “a renovation of the existing structure”.I’m no architect or construction expert, but the drawing on the KC Jazz website looks very different from what I see in Mark’s photo; more like new construction than rennovation … here’s hoping, anyway.

  4. The picture of the new building of KC Jazz on their website looks great – I’m looking forward to seeing it finish!

  5. alexis, the crowd at KC Jazz will have to be an improvement on the days when that site was the home of Scorpio’s Pub and later, Kelly’s. The entire interior of the place was painted BLACK.

  6. Yea I heard that place Kelly’s was awful. Probably had something to do with the management/owner. Crazy people attract crazy patrons.

  7. Wow…dark atmosphere. Well the rendering on the website looks good and like it will brighten the neighborhood. The description says they will be bringing in big names as well as local talent. I wonder what big names they would bring to rahway.

  8. It’s good to see this project finally getting off the ground. I’ve heard talk of this for about 4years now. He certainly has his work ahead of him (2 different structures, different floor levels, & lots of structural issues, etc.)

  9. I say: knock down the rinky little buildings that are there now and build something new. There. That solves the structural problems 🙂

  10. The place on the website looks great! I hope that’s what it’ll look like. Sitting outside and sipping some beers in the summer listening to some jazz….has loads of potential.

  11. I heard the const. permits were tied up by the army corp eng’s.Anthing near a “body” of water is major….The rendering on the kc site looks pretty good. I like the outdoor seating also, the more people out and about for the area the better. They also might stay downtown longer/walk around more/get more bad coffee!!!!!!

  12. Kevin – did you hear that construction was still tied up and therefore that it likely won’t be done within the next 9 months? Or did you mean that you heard that the Army Corps Eng. was the reason for the delay in the past, but that that hurdle has been passed?Just curious whether this time next year the place will be open.

  13. matthew-I ment the orig. hold up was from the army corp of eng, or so the newspapers said. Anyone have recent news on the old wheatena site on Eliz. ave?

  14. Kevin, Last I heard Matzel and Mumford was supposed to develop the Wheatena site as mixed use, condos (32 units) and retail. But that was a few years ago. I haven’t seen much action there recently.

  15. that use to be a old gas station(kelly’s). do you remmeber the dinosur on the sign? they has covered the holes where the lifts went with cement. then when they where working in there they busted threw into a old well that was about 20 feet deep. it was from around the 18th century when they got there water from the freash water table that was underground there. which has droped and dried up long ago. the water here in town is not so fresh no more, yum tasty! i’ll bet that ground is nice and contaminated from all the oil and crap. so i don’t think they will dig it up unless they want to pay more money to disspose of the dirt.

  16. The new building looks like crap. it is good to be mayor i guess, with the design that looks like the train station, lol ugly. it looks like they will be taking ray meigs property to there on the corner because that building on the web site will not fit on the property that is there i don’t think.
