Filling space

As loyal reader Larry first pointed out in his comments to last week’s post, it appears a shoe repair shop will be coming to fill the vacant space at the corner of East Cherry and Main streets.

Buddy Michelman, who owns the building that houses about four storefronts along East Cherry Street, said in a telephone interview last week that the shoe repair shop should be active within the next week or so. As for the other retail spaces he owns, there isn’t much on the horizon.

Since the gallery moved out of the former American Jubilee space a few months ago, that leaves only about two storefronts (Just a Little Healthier and New Era Sportswear) out of almost 10 spaces along the south side of East Cherry from Main Street to the grassy lot next to Rahway Grill.

Here’s an nj.com report that details a switch in leasing agents at Cranford Crossing, a mixed-use project in Cranford erected a few years ago that’s having difficulties in filling its retail space.

As for other spaces downtown, in case you haven’t noticed, Rahway Cafe and Stage is not in the former Woolworth space on Main Street as planned last summer. Instead, The Gilded Lillie is moving from Poplar Street and combining with the auction house formerly in the Robinson Building, with plans on a two-year lease for about 8,000 square feet, according to listing agent Matt Dobrowolski.

Landmark Companies, which owns several properties along that Main Street block and is developing Park Square, also signed tenants for the former Wenson building on the corner of East Milton Avenue: Wizdom Media, a graphic design firm, and Motor Mouth Autos, an executive and high-end car buying service.
