Executive turnover at arts center

For the third time in about five years, the Union County Performing Arts Center will have a new executive director.

Lawrence McCullough stepped down earlier this year, citing the pursuit of “additional services opportunities in the nonprofit field” as the reason for his resignation, according to City Administrator Cherron Rountree.

McCullough had served as executive director since September 2013, succeeding Samson Steinman after he was appointed interim mayor to replace Rick Proctor. Steinman’s tenure as executive director also had lasted about two years, after taking over for Sandra Erwin, who had been executive director for several years.

McCullough left in June and started a public relations firm, PushCause, Inc., geared toward nonprofits and “community-focused initiatives,” according to his LinkedIn profile. Dec. 23 UPDATE: The Metuchen Area Chamber of Commerce announced the appointment of McCullough as its executive director.

Brian Remo, artistic director, chief financial officer and founder of Rahway-based Fearless Productions, currently is serving as interim executive director.

The 1,300-seat UCPAC, built in 1928, has been cast as the centerpiece of downtown redevelopment for years, undergoing a $6-million renovation, completed in 2009. The nonprofit reported revenue of about $880,000 last year, the lowest figure since the facility was closed for a season for renovations.
