Doctor’s office to fill WaMU space

Vacant for almost two years, the former Washington Mutual bank branch on St. Georges Avenue will be filled by a local doctor’s office.

Previous tenants of the single-story building on the corner of Maple Avenue have included a West Coast Video and Pizza Hut.

The Zoning Board of Adjustment last week unanimously approved variances for floor-area ratio and off-street parking among others — essentially the same ones that were allowed for WaMU.

Harshem Family Practice & Women’s Health has operated out of a converted home on Bryant Street for 10 years, using about 1,100 square feet on the first floor and 1,000 square feet in the basement for records storage, with another 400 square feet of off-site storage.

At its new site, the practice will occupy about 3,900 of the 7,000 feet available, the same as WaMu did, and be able to handle all records management on site. The Zoning Board will be allowed to review any future site plans for potential tenants in the additional space.

The property (Block 141, Lot 15.01) was acquired in February for $824,250, according to PropertyShark.com, and paid approximately $32,000 in property taxes in 2008 based on an assessment of $653,800.
