Dessert cafe coming to corner space

Kim’s In The Mix, a dessert cafe, soon will occupy the corner of West Main and Irving streets.

Rafael Ortiz, who owns the property at 209-219 W. Main St. along with several other downtown sites, said some interior work still remains to be done. He estimated the shop could be in operation within a month.

The cafe signed a two-year lease with an option for three years on the 1,200-square-foot space at $1,500 a month, according to Ortiz. It will replace a camera and phone store that left in December.

  1. And besides pastries & things like that, she'll also have over 100 different flavors(not all at the same time)of homemade ice cream.

  2. A bit confused, this is the same place that was going to occupy the space where Gilded Lily now is? the old Woolworth spot? 8,000 sq ft. down to 1,200 sq. ft?

  3. I’m looking forward to checking it out. There have been many “coming soon” disappointments in Rahway, however, let’s hope this cafe actually opens.

  4. Dr. J. Edward,Sorry for the confusion, I meant to include ‘cafes’ among the labels at the bottom of the post, but Blogger automatically filled in ‘Rahway Cafe and Stage’ and I didn’t realize it until I read your comment. I’ve corrected it.Rahway Cafe and Stage never materialized for the old Woolworth space last summer. Nothing to do with this. This actually looks like a prime spot for a dessert cafe/ice cream shop considering its proximity to the arts center — at least on show nights. Am I right?

  5. Very exciting! Having an ice cream shop, let alone homemade, within walking distance of my apartment is nearly too much to handle! I can feel the pounds creeping on me already! Woohoo!

  6. Yeah it really is a good location for a cafe/bakery/ice cream type place. I just hope it has some good seating and nice atmosphere to hang out for a bit to enjoy your coffee and cupcakes or whatever, and is not just a take-out type of place. Especially once the Park Square residents move in, it could be the start of a lively little corner of downtown.

  7. I recently spoke with the owner of this establishment and she said that she intends to stay open late following performances at the UCPAC. Being that most legitimate enterprises in downtown Rahway shut down in the evening, this would be a welcome development.

  8. Met the owner yesterday, she is lovely. The Cafein Linden that she has is very tastefully decorated, and the desserts are to die for. I wish her alot ofluck, if we want these new businesses to stay inRahway, then we have to patronize them. We haveto do something because it's getting depressing driving around and seeing empty storefronts. Iwish her all the success in the world.

  9. Here we go again! Cafe 2! Wish you luck! It is smart to stay open late and have specials on weekends for the UCPAC people.
