Demolition of some of the buildings on the long-dormant Wheatena and Quinn & Boden properties started in earnest over the last week.
The roughly 6 acres along Elizabeth Avenue eventually will be home to a four-building apartment complex called Meridia Brownstones, consisting of 487 rental units. The first phase of construction is expected to begin next spring. The project will be completed in four phases, with full completion of all buildings in five years.
Linden-based Capodagli Property Company has built two other projects in Rahway — the 88-unit Meridia Grand on East Grand Avenue and the 108-unit Meridia Water’s Edge near City Hall Plaza — and is in the midst of construction on the 115-unit Meridia Lafayette Village at Main and Monroe streets.
City Council approved a 30-year PILOT for The Brownstones in August 2014 and the Planning Board approved preliminary and final site plans in December 2014. Remediation of the property also will be necessary, which Capodagli did not seek state brownfields development funding for fear that it could potentially delay the project.

I loved the concept art for this lot from the developers. These brownstones are a huge improvement. It being on heavily traveled street should really help the curb appeal of Rahway. As opposed to the other development projects that people don’t see unless they already have a reason to head downtown.
