Deal$ in line to replace Drug Fair space

I know you all wanted a grocery store, but don’t hold your breath. It’s not quite another dollar store, but Deal$ looks like it will replace the former Drug Fair space by September, according to their Web site (follow the link to the “Coming Soon!” box at the bottom of the page; it’s a .pdf). No word from the landlord, Millburn-based Gelber Associates, on details of the lease.

UPDATE 8/20: New signage for the former Drug Fair space went up this week (photo at right), confirming that Deal$ will be taking over the location.

Interesting story recently in New York magazine about the condo bust in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I’m not comparing Rahway to Williamsburg, to be sure, but maybe parallels on a smaller scale to some extent.

In transit village news, here’s a report last month from nj.com on Morristown’s new development ready to start selling units (at some, um, interesting prices).

  1. In this economy, I think we should be happy that the store isn't going to remain vacant as so many highway stores in Woodbridge are doing right now.The dollar store on Main Street closed 3 years ago when Dornoch planned on building at the site, so I guess this will restore the number of dollar stores back to 2. But what's going to happen to the smaller dollar store right next to where this one is going to go?Dollar stores are great when I have to visit my little nieces and nephews and I need some cheap, Chinese-made crap to hand out and keep them busy for a while.

  2. Leave dog crap outside and watch it attract the flies. Put a crappy store up and watch it attract the undesirables. I'd almost rather have it vacant.

  3. It's not exactly clear to me from their Web site that it's a dollar store, like the one on the other end of the shopping center. It was described to me as the "upscale five dollar division" of the Dollar Tree store. So, like a Five Below-ish?

  4. What's happening just up the street (St. George) at Stone street? The vacant lot just north of the river is being cleared.More homes shoe horned in or a community use?

  5. NJ.com recently ran a story about Newark's stalling revitalization:A Newark vision vanishes with "For Sale" signsGotta love Paul Mulshine's follow-up to the sob story about the Weehawken couple stuck as the only residents of their 32 story Florida condo tower:Why New Jersey's going south faster than its residentsHe's got two public jobs paying him a total well into 6 figures, and she's got a public job with only a $25k salary but the perk of having access to court fines paid in cash that accidentally fall into her pockets. Only in NJ.

  6. RHS49Seems to me the city hasn't spent much time looking for a tenent that would bring customers to that mall. Even a restaurant would have been better than a low cost merchandise store.I too am interested in that clearing of property on StGeorges Ave., near Stone Street. Can you please put something on this blog site to let us know.

  7. Oh good. More rentals or condos because we don't have enough of those right now. Park Square is actually getting some decent traffic of renters looking, not sure how many are signing. I think its great if the town can attract more residents and the overall rents can come down in the newer/nicer buildings but is there really enough demand to fill this supply? Also, has anyone ever seen anyone using the fitness trail across from River Walk? I still don't understand why there is no playground downtown. You can't walk 10 blocks in Westfield without running into another park with a playground yet in Rahway, nothing for the downtowners.I know, why don't I move to Westfield? Because they don't have any good dollar stores.I don't mind dollar/five-dollar stores that are selling closeouts. I despise the 99 cent stores that actually order cheap crap to be manufactured in China just to be sold in their 99-cent stores. Consumerism at its worst. The place going into Drug Fair looks like it might be a hybrid of some sort.

  8. Deals has a new sign accepting applications for hire. (this is good in this economy) and it says to apply at the Dollar Tree so they must be owned by the same people.I have been to alot of dollar stores and I have come to the conclusion that Dollar Tree is the only one I shop in now. Let's remember we are talking about stuff that only costs a dollar here, but they really seem to have good stuff for my hard earned dollar. If Deals has the same quality then I will be a regular.
