Cubanu gets 2 1/2 stars

Hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend. Rest assured we’re getting back in the swing here working on some updates for the coming week.

In the meantime, check out this review last week in where Cubanu received 2 1/2 stars from The Star-Ledger’s food critic.

This was our take last year when the restaurant opened. We’ve been back a few times and our opinion probably hasn’t changed much; it’s still a solid visit, but we’d agree with some commenters that service can be spotty at times for dinner, though the drinks and bar area can be a great visit. I’ve heard the busiest night tends to be Thursday for the free salsa lessons and dancing.

  1. Speaking of fine food and cocktails, they finally closed Kozas bar and grill on West Scott last week. I heard a while back a developer from Clark (Ginesi) wanted to renovated and put condos in its place. I dont live to far from there so anything would be better than that dump.

  2. 2 1/2 stars? Wow, they’re really knocking them out!Seriously, it’s near impossible for a restaurant to survive in downtown Rahway. That particular location seems to be cursed, the previous two places, Fat Tuesdays and 88s went from bad to worse to awful. It was like a ghost town in that part of Rahway any night of the week or year.

  3. Been there many times – the food is above avarage, the drinks are great but the service is horrible. Last time there it took 20 minutes to get bread to the table and then another 15 for the waiter to come to take our order – we left and are not going back due to the poor service – maybe they can improve it as its a nice place

  4. It’s funny – 2.5 stars sounds to me like an overall poor review, but when you read the NJ Star Ledger review, it’s not bad at all. In fact, I’d say the narrative of the review gives the impression that Cubanu is a “good” restaurant (not great, but better than merely “fair”).”Cubanu, which opened late last year, is like Rahway itself — trying to marry the best of the past with a sophisticated and modern world. For the most part, it succeeds.”I always thought 3-stars = “good”, but I guess the Star Ledger food critic is more judicious than most food critics.Anyway, I haven’t been there yet, but one of these days I’d like to try it. I hope they continue to do well.

  5. I’ve had dinner at Cubanu. I thought the service was very good. The food was good and I enjoyed it but nothing spectacular. Worth an occasionally trip there for something different.I love the bar there though. The mixed drinks they have are so good and the live Cuban music makes you feel like you’re on a tropical island instead of being in Rahway. On the down side the drinks can be a bit pricey and I thought the service was slow in the bar area.I’m not enough of a food critic to decide whether the star rating is appropriate but it is a great addition to Rahway. There always seems to be a good crowd there which you could never say about Fat Tuesdays or 88’s. My rating – 3 Cuban cigars!

  6. Not sure that Koza’s is closed for good but a concept plan for a 12-unit condo complex was rejected by the Zoning Board last December because of its density. The developer likely will return with a revised plan shortly.I forgot to mention it in the original post, for some context, but remember The Ledger gave Luciano’s three stars in June.
