Agency tables acquisition of Mangos Grill property

The Redevelopment Agency this month tabled a resolution that would authorize the acquisition of the Mangos Bar & Grill property as part of a proposed 84-unit development.

After about a 40-minute executive session at their Oct. 1 meeting, commissioners tabled a resolution (43-14) to authorize the acquisition of the property at 1349-53 Fulton St. (Block 312, Lot 4.04). The agency in August adopted a resolution authorizing acquisition by negotiation and/or condemnation.

The resolution will come up as unfinished business at the agency’s next meeting, Nov. 5.

Redevelopment Agency attorney Frank Regan explained in an interview before the meeting that approving the resolution would allow the developer to control the properties and move forward with the project while the acquisition price is determined in the courts. After the meeting, he said commissioners had some concerns about the condemnation process. Asked whether the fact that four of the seven commissioners are new to the agency and might be unfamiliar with the project, Regan said that did not play a part. He planned to speak to the developer and property owner and get more information for commissioners to address their concerns.

Warwick-based DMR Construction has proposed a four-story, 84-unit complex, with parking and some retail on the ground floor. The project would encompass the Mangos property on Fulton Street, near the corner of East Milton Avenue (map), as well as parts of adjacent lots to be acquired.
