Cubanu considers second floor

Cubanu, which opened at the former Eighty Eights/Fat Tuesday's site in December, might expand into the second floor of its building on the corner of Main and Lewis streets. Co-owner Pablo Varona said they might decide by the end of the summer whether to pursue a second-floor expansion, which then might come before the Planning Board by year's end.

The second floor currently houses four one-bedroom apartments and renovations likely would turn the space into more of a banquet/catering and overflow space if the co-owners decide to move forward with it.

Can we expand the coffee talk to include breakfast/brunch place talk? Aside from The Grill and Mr. Apple Pie (not counting Big Belly because it seems like the place is more about outbound catering than it is about have a seat and a pancake and eggs breakfast) where does one go for a nice weekend brunch? Cubano could get in on this action with a some nice offerings like Tortilla de Vegetales, Huevos Revoltillo, Cuban toast and of course cafe con leche.

Or is everyone here satisfied to drive to Denny's on St. Georges?

Too ad the guy that had the desert place on Jacques could not make it there he would have been great for Brunch downtown

Seems like a stretch considering they are such a new restaurant. The steady cash flow coming from the tenants would be lost as well. I think the place could hold a lot more people if they just reconfigured the downstairs and opened it up a little.

Hey Realist,

I agree that cubanu should include a breakfast/brunch menu. I like some of your suggestions except they're mainly mexican dishes and cubanu is cuban. lol

Anonymous, I also agree that reconfiguring the downstairs would be a better option then expanding to the upstairs. It would cause for better flow and people will generally be happier.

In general, what does everyone think of the new restaurant options in the downtown area now that they've all been open for some time now?

Looking forward (I think) to the Original Nile Restaurant in the former Back Porch Bar and Grille location. Hopefully they put more thought and effort into the interior than they did the exterior. All they did was paint white over the old awning and slapped some lettering on there, not completely covering up the old lettering of Back Porch. I hope that's just temporary.

I also wonder how they'll advertise for that place considering there's no street presence unless you just happen to drive into the River Place back parking lot. That sign chained up to the tree on Main St. may have worked for Back Porch, but anyone looking to class it up will need to be pretty creative in how they get the word out.

No self-respecting Cuban would consider breakfast complete without cafe con leche and toast. It is the lifeblood of the cuban breakfast. That being said, I don't think simply serving the most traditional of Cuban breakfasts is going to do the trick so you have to offer a menu.

Eggs is eggs (huevos is huevos) and last time I checked, Mexicans and Cubans share the Spanish language. A Cuban Tortilla, not to be confused with a Mexican tortilla, is basically scrambled eggs with anything left in the fridge tossed in. Head over to Puerto Sagua next time you are in Miami for the real deal.

Saying huevos is a mexican dish is sort of like saying pierogi's are really Chinese food. Pierogi, dumpling, kreplach, gyoza, gnocchi, whatever you wanna call it, they all boil (or fry) down to the same basic building blocks.

Not sure if you picked up the "LOL" realist but it was an obvious failed attempt at a joke. I am spanish so I don't really need a lesson on what these breakfast options translate to.

OH WOW! it would have been nice for the landlord to let us tenants know that live above the resturant. seems like we will have to start looking for a new place. i don't think it is fair that we have to find out that we might have to move from a blog. i think the landlord should have notafied us to the future plans of the secound floor apaartments. the guys are very nice people but this seems a little unfair. and yes i know life is not fair, lol. well it looks like we will have to give the landlords a call. thanks man for letting us know in the apartments of what might happen to us.

Would be great to have a traditional steak place like Roots in Summit downtown. David Drake is OK but a hardcore steak place would be a nice compliment. Also - what about seafood? Ethnic restaurants are great but would be great if we could cover the basics first...

You go Alexis!!!!!!!!!!Some out door seating for brunch b fore the heat of the day would be cool.NYC folks love an outdoor brunch.Isnt the Skyview bldg lining up a steakhouse place according to mr Mark? Red Bank has a great mix of downtown places to eat, some a little pricey but great quality.

Who is the other owner of Cubano, is it still the owner of Flynn'?

And I heard an old owner bought the back porch, but which one? The original who had it as a Irish bar or Billy or let it become a dive?

Mr. Rahway said...

FYI...a bit of Rahway history. I've been told that the building that houses Cubanu was once a four-storey hotel in the 19th century that lost the top two floors after a fire.

joe c, you would have loved Pat's on Scott Ave. by Merck. She closed her doors in 2006 and served the yummiest breakfasts in Rahway, if not Union County.

Nomad,

I thought I made it pretty clear that they're considering, thinking about it, and that it's most certainly not definite.

It is still not right to tell the rest of the world and not mention it to your own tenants there possible future. ya know like mention something when they pay there rent. it is kinda upsetting. it would be nice to move from this f-up state with all the corrupt politicions( a whole bunch in rahway). there all over the place, lol.

jim said...

Nomad, that's the advantages to owning rather than renting. The owner of those apartments has a right to negotiate with whoever he wants. Anyway, it seems like its only Cubanu's desire to expand. I didn't see any mention that the landlord is doing anything. And if the landlord did, I'm sure you'd be properly notified as there are laws that protect renters in this matter.

Does anyone have any idea who or what is moving into the old back porch bar location? Its the only place in town with a fairly nice deck to sit outside while eating/drinking. I hope it something with a little mroe class than the past establishments

Alexis said...

Realist.....of course we're friends...

about back porch...

They're opening a new place called "The Original Nile" in that location. The owners are still the same owners of the chinese take out on main street but the new tenants are former river place residents.

Cubanu owners....

This restaurant is owned entirely by two brothers and one of their closest friends. I don't know of any other owner who may be connected to flynns or the former 88's.

Mr. Rahway said...

Alexis, the owners of 88s sold the building, business and liquor license to the two owners of Cubanu. I don't think that they are involved in any way in the building or the business.

Dear Anonymous (with grammar issues),

there= at or in that place; in that matter--"I agree with you there."

their= possessive case of they.

they're = contraction of "they are".

To the spelling teacher thanks for quiting your hi paying job to give a spelling class. if ya have nothing better to then come on blogs and insult people because of spelling errors then you should be charging for these high skilled lessons, lol. maybe a spell check would have been helpfull but none was to be found. there(oops)are probaly some higher paying jobs at the wonderfull rahway high school that are open to some one with such skills. thank you for the free spelling lesson, lol.

I agree let's just try and correct all the wrong things in this town. That would benefit us all.

I gave Cubanu 2 try's on the first try we waited 1 hour for our for to come and they kept asking us if we wanted more drinks. The 2nd try we waited 1 1/2 hour for our food, no bread came to the table, and again try to get us to buy more drinks. When the food finally came both times I thought it was not good, expensive and small portions. Go to My cuban Rose in Kenilworth. Now that's Cuban Cusine!
